Education Glossary (part 2)

In this glossary of 20 words, you will learn about different words used in education. You will see a list of words with their definition. There will also be some examples to help you to understand them. You will also see a French translation for each word. This glossary can be useful in some different field of study because we all receive an education.

Autodidactism

noun

Autodidacticism (also autodidactism) or self-education is education without the guidance of masters or institutions (such as schools).

Example: An enthusiastic autodidact, he dropped out of college in 1969 and continued to learn on his own.

Brainstorming

verb

Group discussion to produce ideas or solve problems.

Example: Brainstorming is a good way of generating ideas.

Bully

noun

A person who habitually seeks to harm or intimidate those whom they perceive as vulnerable.

Constructivism

noun

A set of assumptions about the nature of human learning that guide constructivist learning theories and teaching methods. Constructivism values developmentally appropriate, teacher-supported learning that is initiated and directed by the student.

Example: Constructivism has emerged in recent years as a dominant paradigm in education and has had a major intellectual impact on the development of pedagogy, especially in mathematics and science.

Curriculum

noun

The subjects comprising a course of study in a school or college.

Example: He studied at the famous mining academy of Freiberg, in Saxony, and on completing his curriculum travelled in Germany and France.

Dyslexia

noun

A general term for disorders that involve difficulty in learning to read or interpret words, letters, and other symbols, but that do not affect general intelligence.

Example: He improved by two grades in each subject, despite his severe dyslexia.

Epistemology

noun

The theory of knowledge, especially with regard to its methods, validity, and scope. Epistemology is the investigation of what distinguishes justified belief from opinion.

Example: It is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to draw a hard and fast line between epistemology.

Invigilator

noun

Someone who ensures the smooth running of exams. An invigilator is responsible for ensuring that the Awarding Body's regulations are complied with; that exams start and finish at the correct time; that exam papers are secure whilst in their care; that attendance and seating plans are recorded; and that no cheating takes place.

Example: If you have a problem, ask the invigilator.

Literacy

noun

He ability to read, write, speak, and listen.

Example: The program is intended to promote adult literacy among people who have had very little schooling.

Mentoring

verb

Advise or train (someone, especially a younger colleague).

Example: The system includes a variety of support services, including mentoring around-the-clock, continuing education and seminars and a resource network.

Overlearning

verb

Overlearning involves studying material beyond a predetermined level of mastery (criterion)—in other words, continued study after one already knows the material.

Example: Overlearning may be more useful in instances when learners only need short-term retention of the material.

Stipend

noun

A fixed regular sum paid as a salary or allowance.

Example: We will pay a monthly stipend of $200.

Tuition

noun

A sum of money charged for teaching or instruction by a school, college, or university.

Example: Her uncle agreed to pay part of her tuition.

Wisdom

noun

The quality of having experience, knowledge, and good judgment; the quality of being wise.

Example: He had the wisdom to stop before he said too much.

Workshop

noun

A brief intensive course, a seminar or a series of meetings emphasizing interaction and exchange of information among a usually small number of participants.

Example: The boy made a new friend in his workshop.

Assessment

noun

The evaluation or estimation of the nature, quality, or ability of someone or something.

Example: It's a difficult problem that requires careful assessment.

Common sense

noun

Good sense and sound judgment in practical matters.

Example: Obey the laws and use common sense when operating your boat.

E-learning

noun

Learning conducted via electronic media, typically on the internet.

Example: Training and continuing education will demand enormous effort of us with 'e-learning' and 'e-business'.

Observational learning

noun

Learning that occurs as a function of observing, retaining and replicating behavior observed in others.

Example: Observational learning takes place by watching others clean their room.

Polymath

noun

A person who excels in multiple fields, particularly in both arts and sciences.

Example: He really was a most unusual man a genuine polymath.
